WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition 2018 concluded successfully with some 70 skills champions honoured
Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Executive Officer of the WorldSkills International David HOEY expressed that he was pleased to witness the young skills champions being honoured at the prize presentation ceremony. He was particularly impressed by the competitors’ enthusiasm and commitment towards the competition and professional skills. He wished the awardees every success in WorldSkills Kazan next year. Mr Hoey believed that the young competitors would be wonderful ambassadors for Hong Kong and contribute to industry with their professional knowledge and skills markedly enhanced after the competition.
Welcoming the audience, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Youth Skills Competition Dr Clement CHEN shared his observations from earlier exchanges with leaders of other WorldSkills members in Shanghai. “Leaders of the member countries unanimously agreed that skills are essential to the global economy and to the future prosperity of every country,” he remarked. “All of them recognised the power of skills and the need to promote and encourage vocational and professional education and training.” Dr Chen added that WorldSkills members should work hand in hand to nurture skilled professionals. He also complimented the young competitors on their high level of skills and enthusiasm for their chosen professions.
At the Prize Presentation Ceremony, 72 competitors from 25 trades were presented “Competition Winners”. The winners will undertake intensive training in the coming year to enhance their skills for further screening to take part in WorldSkills Kazan next year.
TANG Wai-lun, a graduate of the Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), was a winner in the Mechatronics trade. He explained that competitors were required to assemble and write a computer programme for a simulated factory production line – an assignment that was akin to his future job in mechanical engineering and thus conducive to his career development. Prior to the competition, Wai-lun received intensive training getting prepared. He gained immense satisfaction seeing the successful launch of the assembly line he had developed. In the coming year, he will spare no effort in training for the chance to participate in the WorldSkills Competition.
Jointly organised by the VTC, the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and the Clothing Industry Training Authority (CITA) biennially, the WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition provides a platform for people aged 21 or below to compare notes and advance their professional skills, encouraging them to excel themselves and contribute to society. The 44th WorldSkills Competition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, last October saw around 1,300 young professionals from close to 60 countries and regions participating in 51 skills competitions, with competitors from Hong Kong winning a Bronze medal in Beauty Therapy and Medallions for Excellence in seven other trades. First participated in the WorldSkills Competition in 1997, Hong Kong has won two Golds, one Silver and five Bronze medals, as well as 46 Medallions for Excellence.
