The Vocational Training Council (VTC) has welcomed the approval of the Legislative Council on a new commitment to enable VTC to implement the Pilot Subsidy Scheme for Students of Professional Part-time Programmes. Starting 2016/17 academic year, the Pilot Subsidy Scheme covers some 50 self-financing part-time programmes offered by VTC in the field of construction and engineering (Programmes to be offered by VTC under the Scheme are listed in the annex.) Part-time evening programmes are now open for application until 21 June 2016 through the VTC Web-based Admissions System. In the Budget this year the Government announced a new commitment of $200 million to provide tuition fee subsidies for students admitted to designated professional part-time programmes of VTC. To cover three cohorts of students, the Pilot Subsidy Scheme is launched with a view to encouraging working adults to pursue higher qualifications which would help enhance their upward mobility while promoting professionalism in the construction services and engineering industries. Under the Scheme, successful applicants will be refunded 60% of the tuition fees of eligible programmes, to a maximum of $45,000 per person. Each applicant may apply for fee refund for not more than two programmes under the Pilot Scheme. The tuition fee will be reimbursed by instalments at the end of each term of the programme upon successful completion. Apart from the programmes covered by the above Pilot Subsidy Scheme, VTC will also provide other part-time-evening and part-time-day programmes in 2016/17 academic year leading to the award of Higher Diploma, Diploma of Foundation Studies, Certificate of Vocational Studies, Diploma of Vocational Education and other professional qualifications. These market driven and industry-recognised programmes cover professional sectors including design, information technology, applied science and business administration.
