Ten Vocational Training Council (VTC) students were awarded the first ever HSBC Vocational Education Scholarship in recognition of their remarkable performances in pursuing vocational and professional education and training (VPET). VTC is the tertiary institution with the highest number of recipients awarded with this Scholarship. VPET has become more important than ever for the future development of Hong Kong. To recognize the outstanding all-round achievements of students pursuing VPET, especially in their vocational aspirations and commitment to Hong Kong, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) establishes the HSBC Vocational Education Scholarship to award the Higher Diploma or Associate Degree students for their excellence and accomplishments from 11 tertiary institutions. This year a total of 47 students were each awarded HK$20,000 under the first HSBC Vocational Education Scholarship Scheme, and were further honoured on the HSBC Scholars Day held on 13 June. Selected VTC candidates for the scholarship had to undergo rounds of screening by separate judging panels formed by VTC staff and HSBC senior executives, with ten VTC students of different disciplines finally making it through. (See Annex for the awardee list.) One notable awardee was CHUNG Cheuk-wai, Year 2 student of the Higher Diploma in Mobile Applications Development programme of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), member institution of VTC. Hooked on information technology since his secondary school years, he achieved excellent results with a close to perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average, which led to an offer from the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. While at IVE Cheuk-wai developed a virtual gifting app utilising virtual reality and augmented reality technologies, that earned him the praise of teachers. His app, which he named ‘WishnWrap’, provides new user gift-giving experiences. Looking ahead, he said he would use his scholarship to explore Big Data theories and practices to further his future studies and career.
